WOLFGANG SCHELLMANN

 

Wolfgang Schellmann began his scoring in the Spanish Campaign where he scored 12 victories. Born in 1911 his first unit was I/JG77 which he saw combat with during the Polish Campaign. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz for his 10th victory and outstanding leadership. By 1941 Schellmann took over JG27 as Kommodore he led this unit throughout the Balkan Campaign, his unit was also one of the first to cross over into Russia during operation Barbarossa. On the 22nd of June 1941 Schellmann was flying his 150th sortie when he was intercepted by Soviet fighters, schellmann scored at such close range that his own Messerschmitt was damaged by exploding fragments. Forced to bail out he was captured by Russian fighters - Wolfgang Schellmann was never seen again..........
