Franz Barten joined the Luftwaffe in 1939. Posted to IV/JG51, he then transferred to III/JG 53 in June of 1943, he had scored 52 victories by August of 1944. On the 4th of August 1944 Barten was on a mission to intercept U.S bombers, he engaged in a dogfight with a number of US fighters and received several hits to his aircraft, forced to bail out Barten was reportedly shot by an Allied fighter while suspended in his parachute, it was his 895th mission. |
