Gulayev was to prove himself as a phenomenal fighter pilot. Flying the P-39 Airacobra he had a strike rate that was second to none, proving himself in defence of Stalingrad in 1942 he became an Ace in a day when he downed five aircraft in just one sortie. He received two HSUs (Hero of the Soviet Union) awards, Gulayev became the fourth highest scoring Allied fighter pilot of the War, he met the enemy on only 69 occasions and finished the War with 57 kills a truly outstanding strike rate. |
